What is a Seismic Accelerograph?
It is an earthquake recording instrument that records any seismic event and is later on used by the experts to determine the structural health of a building who have been shaken by the earthquake several times, through these accurate data, experts, can determine if the building is still safe to occupy.
This seismic monitoring device can be integrated into several building securities like FDAS and PA systems, wherein it can set off alarms and notify people of the earthquake. Building owners are now required to comply to the minimum standard specifications stated in DPWH's Guidelines and Implementing Rules on Earthquake Recording Instrumentation (ERI), which was mandated by NBCDO Memorandum Circular No. 1, Series of 2015.
The purpose of the guidelines is to provide earthquake instrumentation for buildings to:
- Record and analyse building response during major seismic events
- Provide immediate alarm annunciation to ensure safety of the occupants
The installation of the Earthquake Recording Instrumentation (ERI) shall be part of the requirements for the Annual Certificate of Inspections for existing buildings and as a pre-condition for the issuance of Certificate of Occupancy for new buildings.
Compliance on the provisions is under the office of the local Building Officials and City/Municipal Engineer who are required by DPWH to submit quarterly compliance report of the buildings under their respective areas of jurisdiction.
